SO, WHY IS FASHION STYLE IMPORTANT?

First of all, you are worthy! Already and always just as you are. There is nothing you have to do or change in to to be worthy. Your worth is in your beingness - periodt. You just are worthy, worthy is you. Now let's enter into the matrix of indoctrination that most of us exist in that tells us worth is defined by some metric of value.

PRETTY PRIVILEGE & THE HALO EFFECT

People stuck in the matrix believe that the way you look or the things that you have defines your worth - which is why you’ve probably seen all the pretty privilege videos ravaging social media. It’s called the halo effect which suggests that we assume people who we deem as attractive as nicer and generally better people. SimplyPsychology.com states, "The halo effect refers to the tendency to allow one specific trait or our overall impression of a person, company or product to positively influence our judgment of their other related traits" and "A single positive quality of a person may induce a positive predisposition toward every aspect of that person while one negative attribute of that person may induce an overall negative impression of that person." Ted Bundy being at large for so long was a product of the halo effect. People who fit into societies standards of attractiveness are tipped better. "A study by Parrett (2015) examined the impact of beauty on earnings based on the tipping data of restaurants in Virginia. He discovered that more attractive servers earned in tips nearly $1261 more annually than their unattractive counterparts." Standards of beauty shift in different places in the world, but since white people conquered the world those standards, in most places, are in the image of what the white man says is attractive and the rest of us follow along. It's clear, there is a privilege and unconscious bias towards attractive people. So, now that we understand the science behind pretty privilege we can understand why fashion style is so important in crafting the life that you want. You want the first impression of you to be the best impression of you! Fashion is a tool to get the best out of life: money, jobs, and connections. As superficial as fashion style sounds, it can be one of many tools to aid in gaining security out of life. Its the first impression people receive before you even open your mouth. You have a decision to make, you can ignore all those facts and not value the worth of getting to know yourself interpreted through your style or you can break through the matrix by knowing everyone else judges people by aesthetic and play the game by letting them assume you are more "worthy" simply because you are slaying the style game.

You want the first impression of you to be the best impression of you!

5 THINGS TO NEVER FORGET:

  1. BODY TYPE: There are 5 major body types for women. Discovering yours is a major asset in the style game and can make selecting pieces that compile your wardrobe to be much easier when you have this knowledge. It's like when I learned my hair's porosity and therefore knew which products to buy for my specific hair type.
  2. TEXTURE & FABRICS: Texture refers to the way a fabric feels on your skin. I prefer soft fabrics like silk, cashmere and Egyptian cotton. There are many types of textures such as smooth, chunky, fine, scratchy, furry, soft, hard etc. Developing your sense of self in relation to your lifestyle and favorite fabrics could be a total lifesaver so you aren't standing out in a wool outfit in the middle of a sunny California summer.
  3. COLOR PALETTE: You don't have to stick to a particular color palette, I sure don't, however knowing your style mood and tone you are going for in any particular look is beneficial. Think floral or perhaps earth tones or chrome - you get the picture!
  4. CUT: is the style or shape of a garment. Shorts versus pants, short sleeve versus tank tops - its all about the cut! My favorite cut for a top is a halter top to show off my broad shoulders and also a sweet heart neck line because I think it's super cute
  5. ACCESSORIES: in my opinion, as a professional model, less is always more when it comes to accessories. Give one statement piece and keep it pushin!
  6. (BONUS) SHOES: Make or break the finished look - PERODT! Keep it simple, comfy and chic.

FASHION RULES TO FOLLOW

Example of Cultural Appropriation

  • If you like it, that’s a great indication that it’s part of your personal style! So no need to toss out your entire wardrobe, just have a yes, no and maybe pile and do some spring cleaning to see what you already have and what's worth keeping.
  • Don’t follow trends or what anyone else thinks - YOU be the trendsetter!
  • Don’t appropriate something from another culture without knowing the context especially when you don't know the context - PERIODT.
  • Skin: If you are showing off the top half keep the bottom half covered (ex: crop top & jeans versus crop top & shorts)
  • Have a comfy chic pair of heels, flats, sneakers and boots. Your feet will thank you in the long run. Think 'comfy chic'.
  • Include at least one WOW statement piece in your outfit. In the end, fashion is all about you, boo. Trust your instincts and have a blast with your style. Don't be afraid to take risks, experiment, and own your unique fashion choices. You're a trendsetter, not a follower, so let your confidence shine through every outfit you rock. Remember, the most important accessory is your attitude, so strut like the runway is yours!
  • Experiment! Try a bunch of different things! Our style is influenced by things we aren’t even conscious of so cut out the noise and try it. Break those fashion rules, honey! Don't be afraid to try new styles and trends. Put on that sequined jumpsuit or those killer combat boots—whatever tickles your fancy. Mix and match unexpected pieces, play with textures and layers, and turn heads with your fearless fashion choices. Remember, fashion is all about self-expression, so own it and werk it!
  • Don’t buy anything without trying it on first or checking the return policy. Trust me!
  • Dry clean only vs washing machine: practicality, not everyone can spend $75 everything they want to do their laundry at the dry cleaners. If that is you, pay attention to the fabrics you are purchasing to make sure you won't ruin them in there first wash.
  • Create a fashion foundation. Have a variety of tops! To slay every day, you need a solid wardrobe foundation, babe. Invest in timeless pieces that will never go out of style. Think killer jeans that hug your curves, a little black dress that screams sophistication, and versatile tops that go with anything. These essentials will be the backbone of your fashion empire, so make 'em count!
  • Consider style types, here are a few to get you started:
Boho Style: hippie vibes, earth and floral color tones*
Classic Style: neutral colors, elegant, minimal, seemingly effortless, sophisticated
PreppyStyle: white colors, cotton, stripes, flats, circle skirts
Feminine Style: flowy and floral, soft and fluid fabrics*
Androgynous: blazers and slacks or dress pants, oversized shirts
Edgy Style: fitted, chunky metal jewelry, graphic tees*
Trendy Style: whatever trend is in, putting multiple styles together
Retro\Vintage Style: retro, feels from a different time
Streetwear: baggy clothing, sneakers a lil bit of trendy, comfy chic
Grunge: greys, muted tones, and oversized clothing
    And more...

HOW TO DEVELOP YOUR PERSONAL FASHION STYLE

  • How do you want to be perceived: describe what you think you want your style to be in 3 words. Mine are Boho | Sophisticated | Feminine.
  • Identify your body type and shape: Understanding your body type and shape will help you choose clothing items that flatter your figure and make you feel confident.
  • Experiment with different colors and patterns: Try out different colors and patterns to find what works best for you. Don't be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things.
  • Invest in quality pieces: Invest in high-quality clothing items that you can mix and match with other pieces in your wardrobe. This will help you build a functional and versatile wardrobe that can be worn for different occasions.
  • Layering: 2 skirts, maybe a dress with jeans, or maybe a small shirt over a big shirt to give you that corset look
  • Accessorize: Accessories are a great way to add personality and flair to any outfit. Experiment with different accessories like jewelry, hats, and scarves to create a unique look.
  • Pay attention to fit: Ensure that your clothing fits well and is comfortable. Clothing that is too tight or too loose can be unflattering and uncomfortable.
  • Be confident: Ultimately, the most important thing in developing your personal fashion style is to be confident in your choices. Wear what makes you feel comfortable and confident, and don't worry too much about what others may think.
